The Long Lens

“50 year old us will be really thankful we made this decision…”

A good friend said, as we agreed on what feels like a big thing, at least for today.

40 year old us can imagine his statement, but not experience it.

The more grey hair that sneaks in, the more I’m starting to think things like…

Let’s measure things in decades, not days.

Let’s invest in relationships, not likes.

Let’s plant trees, not cut all the flowers.

Let’s think like owners, not like consumers.

Let’s think about healing and health, not fads and fits.

Let’s generously give, not selfishly take.

Let’s do the work today, and tomorrow, and the next day, so we can become an overnight success in 30 years.

Let’s lay the groundwork for the generations after us.

Let’s create abundance, not create drama.

Let’s hold the paradox of today being the only thing that matters, full of presence and awareness, while also believing the best is yet to come.

Let’s leave a legacy.

Let’s look at it all through the long lens.

We’ll get there, together, by smiling, breathing, and going slowly (thanks, Thich Nhat Hanh).

90 year old us will be really thankful we made this decision.
